Tokyobike Mono: the quintessential city bicycle.
At first, I was skeptical about riding on a pair of 26” wheels, having been used to 29” wheels during the years I’ve been cycling. But thanks to Tokyobike’s hospitable experience at the Kichijoji location—where they provide keen customers the opportunity to test out the bicycle of their choice—my skepticism vanished.
The Mono brings you closer to the ground, making it possible for faster, sharper turns throughout the streets of the city — something that was exactly what I didn’t know I needed. Additionally, my decision to opt with single-speed pushed it even further into the “city only” ride format.
I absolutely love the minimalistic design combined with its ivory colour, a tuneful combination with my seat of choice, the Brooks B17 saddle in honey. This custom change was a large highlight of the purchase, as I used to live in London where I would never risk investing in a high-end saddle, knowing very well it would get stolen. However, in Tokyo, where there is virtually no crime, I knew it would be safe to go for the upgrade.
If this were a review for the Mono, rather than the rambling confession of love that it is, I would give the two-wheeled beauty a 10/10. I ride it consistently, to the point where I can’t imagine life without it.
I’ve even given her (yes, it’s a she) a name, inspired by her shade and country of creation: Mochi. 🍡
