Kanazawa is the capital city of Ishikawa Prefecture, situated on the west coast of Japan. While Kanazawa may seem inconsiderable at first glance, it has big things to offer — including museums, markets, hot springs and historical sites. In the end, our four day trip to the genial city proved it was not quite enough time to fit everything in.
Kanazawajo, an Edo Period castle and its surrounding grounds, is one of the most beautiful I’ve seen yet. The elegant contrast of black and white across the well kept grounds provided for a fascinating walk through small bits of Japanese history.
My favourite museum in the city, among the many that exist there, was the D.T.Suzuki Museum. The featured minimalist architecture visitors can explore is designed by the hand of Yoshio Taniguchi, who also designed the New York MoMA and Ginza Six in Tokyo. It is a place where one can observe his talents in a wonderfully idyllic environment.
Additionally, we visited the local fish market, called “Omicho Ichiba,” to enjoy fresh seafood that has contributed to the city’s economy for over 300 years. I indulged in what was by far the best ウニ (sea urchin) I have ever had — with the creamy texture and complete absence of any unwanted fishiness, it reminded me of butter!
The surrounding areas of Kanazawa have a lot to offer as well, from a mystical moss forest to a modern-style onsen designed by the aforementioned famous architect, Yoshio Taniguchi.
If Kanazawa was not already on your radar, here’s your sign to go — it’s definitely worth a visit.
