As soon as the ‘State of Emergency’ was lifted here in Japan, we snapped up tickets for two to travel to Kyoto via Shinkansen (bullet train). We truly lucked out with the dates we chose as the Sakura, or cherry blossoms, were nearly in full bloom (much earlier than the usual peak of the season). It was an amazing long weekend away exploring the cultural and historical heart of Japan.
Although I had been here before, our itinerary for this round allowed us more time to explore and leisurely take in the city. From countless Buddhist temples and shrines, to an abundance of restaurants and craft beer spots — with a wide choice of contemporary coffee shops in between — there was so much to discover in this city that presented both traditional and modern experiences.
This time around, the two highlights for me were the traditional areas ‘Higashiyama District,’ as well as the relatively new Ace Hotel. The Higashiyama District, more so special this time of year, featured the cherry blossoms and visitors dressed up in their traditional Yukata.
The Ace Hotel was designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, and his influence was indeed felt throughout the building. I think I’ll do a separate post about the hotel itself. If I had to recommend two places to experience, it would be this hotel and the Higashiyama District.
I hope you enjoy the photos!
